February 2019 Squarespace Product Updates

Every week as a Squarespace Circle Member (sign-up if you regularly build client websites) we get the latest product updates sent to our email. We realized that even though this community is growing, there are a lot of other Squarespace users that don’t get these updates, so the Brad Good team wanted to compile the most important changes every month in a easy to read blog post.

If you are wondering about all of the new updates Squarespace released in February, read more below!

Week: January 28 - February 3

Hide Pages From Search Engines

We added a built-in option to hide a page or collection from search engines. In the SEO tab of Page Settings, check Noindex—this adds the tag to the page header without needing Page Code Injection.

Checking this setting also removes the page from the sitemap. Similar to disabling a page or password-protecting it, applying the setting to a collection applies it to all items within that collection.

Discontinuing The Portfolio App

We removed Squarespace Portfolio, our image gallery management mobile app, from the App Store on Friday. We’re notifying the small number of customers who still use the app very soon. In early March, the app will no longer work if it’s installed on a device.

By retiring Portfolio, Squarespace can continue investing in a stronger suite of mobile apps. To manage Gallery Pages on the go, try the new Squarespace App.

Week: February 4 - February 10

Export Sales Data

We added an option to download sales data from the Accounting panel in Commerce. This downloads as an Excel file and breaks down credits, charges, taxes, and payment processor fees into different tabs.

This is a good option for clients who want to import data into their own accounting software instead of integrating with Xero.

Image Editor And Device View For Email Campaigns

Email Campaigns now includes the Image Editor and Device View.

Removed Search Option For Instagram Block

Instagram discontinued the API that allows customers to search and display content related to a specific hashtag or search term. The Instagram Block can now only pull content from the connected account and the Account tab of the block no longer has a Search option.

Customers who had the Search option enabled before this update will see a message in the block explaining that it’s no longer supported.

Week: February 11 - February 17

Removal Of Trailing Slash From All Urls

We used to add a trailing slash to all Squarespace site URLs, which caused both versions of the URL to appear in Google Search Console and site validators. This caused problems when both URLs appeared as conflicting information about the page's canonical URL. We've now resolved this issue, and search engines should now only see the correct canonical URL without the trailing slash.

This may result in Google Search Console reporting fewer indexed URLs as the duplicates are removed. You or your clients may also see a dip in keyword traffic stats as a result of the trailing slash being removed, but that traffic should then move to the correct URL.

If you’re still seeing URLs with trailing slashes in Google Search Console, ask Google to recrawl the site.

2 FA Via SMS 2

We expanded our two-factor authentication (2FA) to let customers get authentication codes via text message (SMS). You can use SMS as a standalone 2FA option, or as a backup for 2FA via the Authentication App.

This initial launch supports mobile phone numbers from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia.

Week: February 18 - February 24

Commerce Survey

Are there any missing Commerce features holding you back from using Squarespace for your online store clients? Let us know in this brief survey.

Inventory Api Beta

Sign up for the Inventory API beta, which lets developers build integrations that can retrieve inventory info for SKUs and adjust inventory levels.

Editing Prices On The Android Commerce App

Squarespace updated the Android Commerce app to v1.4.5. With this new version, merchants can now:

  • Edit product prices

  • Fixed an issue where people with sites set to English were seeing some of their site UI in non-English languages.

  • Fixed issues with Email Campaigns where the header overlapped the content when opened in Outlook Windows 10 or Windows 7 Mail.

Content Editors Have Email Campaigns Permissions

Site contributors with Content Editor permissions can now compose and send Email Campaigns.
